Scattered, Lasting Remnants by Echo Klaproth

The idea for Scattered, Lasting Remnants originated with two words taken from the 18th National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada, January 2002, and a session titled: "Fine Lines."

Scattered, Lasting Remnants is a compilation of "fine lines" that have been penned somewhere in the heart of the West by modern-day cowboys, poets, and songwriters. All of the lines speak to the heart and soul of a lifestyle that has been on the endangered species list for more than a century. Despite that consideration, the lines in the book are from "stories and the songs which continue to define us as a people and bind us together in a culture."

Collectively, the voices include words inherited from ancestors and attempts to imitate the classics. They reflect the voices from the past that, through the pen, articulate the present and point to the future. You will be moved by the power in these simple excerpts from the work of well-known poets and songwriters.

They'd crack a smile like a crocodile
then try and put the truth on trial,
and all the while, their lies would pile
like beer nut bags on the barroom floor.
—Baxter Black

My heart would beat the world a warning
those horsemen now rode all with me
and we were good and we were free.
—Buck Ramsey

And this will be the option:
take a cowboy for adoption
and you'll know you helped to save a dying breed.
—Elizabeth Ebert

A group of words redeemed from time
To last when he moves on,
Set down with hurried flourish
'Fore his mem'ry of 'em's gone.
—J.B. Allen

The Guinness caresses the Harp as you sip it;
Forgiveness, it blesses the heart if you let it.
—Paul Zarzyski
