Cowboy Poetry, Tracks That Won't Blow Out
by Ray Owens

I consider Ray Owens to be among the best contemporary cowboy poet writers. His poems show the depth of thought and planning that were typical of everything Ray did. His words were very carefully chosen and Ray was able to comment on all stages of life through poetry. He had a special feeling for horses, having raised and sold them for much of his life.

Ray now qualifies as a “classic” poet, having written a wealth of good material before passing on to “greener pastures over the hill.” These poems are a great addition to anyone’s collection of cowboy verse.

– Rolf Flake

Ray Owens of Artesia, New Mexico, has been writing and reciting cowboy poetry since 1993 and has been a featured performer at many of the cowboy poetry gatherings throughout the southwestern United States. His tape, “Some Boots are Made for Keepin’” was nominated for Top Album in 1997 and 1998 by the Academy of Western Artists. He was a three-time finalist for the Academy of Western Artists Male Cowboy Poet of the Year Award, an Honored Guest on Cowboy Poetry at the Bar-D Ranch, and several of his poems have been featured on Red Steagall’s Cowboy Corner radio show. His two tapes are Some Boots Are Made for Keepin’ and Reflections.

Ray passed from this life on April 6, 2007. He received great pleasure from writing and reciting cowboy poetry at the many gatherings he was privileged to attend over the years. His family hopes you enjoy Ray’s poems for many years to come.
